Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Accounting Manager in the Hampton Roads area to oversee and manage the accounting functions of our property & casualty (P&C) insurance brokerage operations. This role is critical in maintaining the financial integrity of our brokerage activities and ensuring compliance with trust accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in insurance accounting, a strong command of fiduciary responsibilities, and proven leadership capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Manage day-to-day accounting operations specific to insurance brokerage, including premium billing, cash applications, carrier payables, and client receivables.
• Ensure fiduciary/trust accounting is handled in accordance with legal and industry standards.
• Reconcile broker commissions, overrides, and contingent income against carrier statements.
• Supervise the monthly close process, ensuring timely and accurate reporting of brokerage revenue, expense accruals, and intercompany allocations.
• Review or prepare reconciliations for insurance-related accounts, bank statements, and other general ledger items.
• Support the preparation of financial statements (monthly, quarterly, annually) in compliance with GAAP.
• Oversee external audits, regulatory reviews, and assist with tax and compliance filings relevant to insurance operations.
• Partner with the carrier relations team and agency partners to ensure accurate disbursement of premiums and tracking of commissions.
• Continuously evaluate and enhance accounting controls and operational efficiency, especially across systems like Applied Epic, EZLynx, and NetSuite.
• Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team with a focus on training, support, and performance management.
• Stay up to date on changes in accounting standards, insurance regulations, and industry best practices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights that support business decision-making.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
• Prior experience in the insurance industry is required.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or leadership capacity.
• Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
• Proficiency with accounting systems such as QuickBooks, NetSuite, or similar ERP platforms.
• Hands-on experience with Applied Epic (required); familiarity with EZLynx is a plus.
• Exceptional analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• High level of attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
• Based in the Hampton Roads area, with the ability to attend occasional local office events in Virginia Beach.
