Join SMH Consultants as a Construction Inspector!

SMH is ready for a skilled and motivated entry-level Construction Inspector to join our team in the Kansas City (Mission, KS) office. This position will perform construction inspection and field observation to determine acceptance of work based on compliance with applicable project plans, standards, and specifications. You’ll work with a supervisor and apply construction knowledge and materials testing requirements to document the Contractor’s progress.

What You'll Do: You’ll be at the heart of construction projects, ensuring quality and compliance with project plans. Training provided.

  • Field Observation and Testing: Perform materials testing for soils, concrete, and asphalt to ensure top-quality materials are used. This may require lifting and handling containers weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Read and Interpret Construction Plans: Gain valuable experience with KDOT/MODOT standards while navigating technical documents.
  • Construction Inspections: Measure and inspect installed work for acceptance, providing feedback and ensuring everything aligns with specifications.
  • Documenting and Reporting: Maintain daily logs and create detailed reports using tools like Microsoft products and AWP (AASHTOWare) to capture progress.

What We're Looking For: We’re looking for someone eager to learn, ready to jump into the field, and committed to delivering high-quality work. The candidate must be l egally authorized to work in the U.S. without a visa sponsorship and have a valid driver’s license .

  • Math and Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Products and basic math skills. A good understanding of measurements and construction processes is a plus.
  • Strong Problem Solving and Communication Skills: Ability to follow directions, interpret plans, and effectively communicate with contractors, engineers, and supervisors verbally and through writing.
  • Physical Considerations: Ability to work in varying weather conditions and be exposed to outdoor work hazards, such as heavy equipment, pollutants, toxic waste, electrical risks, and vibration. You must be prepared to work additional hours when needed, including nights and weekends, and be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including KDOT FRA testing.
  • Experience: Desire to develop new skills and contribute to the success of projects. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. College coursework in STEM is preferred, but no previous construction experience is necessary.
