Position Overview:

DRG Architects is seeking a visionary and strategic leader for the role of Director of Architecture at our newly established Manhattan office. This critical leadership position is dedicated to championing the quality and innovation of our architectural work, driving the continuous advancement of our technical design capabilities, talent, resources, processes, and outcomes.

The Director of Architecture will be a practicing architect with a wealth of experience in developing complex technical building solutions, with a particular emphasis on leveraging cutting-edge technology in design. This role is tasked with creating and executing a long-term vision for enhancing the quality and sophistication of our firm’s technical design solutions. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Director of Architecture will collaborate closely with other senior executives, including our Market Sector Leaders, Design Director, and Sustainability Director, to achieve these objectives and further elevate DRG Architects’ industry standing.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Leadership:  Spearhead the continuous improvement of our technical design capabilities, ensuring that our built work meets the highest standards of quality, innovation and design.
  • Technical Expertise:  Provide leadership in the development of detailed, complex technical building solutions, integrating emerging technologies to enhance design accuracy, efficiency, and sustainability.
  • Client Care:  Develop and maintain client relationships as trusted advisor. 
  • Business Development:  Lead NYC business development with the assistance of DRG Architects’ marketing and business development staff. 
  • Quality Assurance:  Oversee firmwide technical Quality Assurance and Quality Control, ensuring that all work aligns with industry best practices and mitigates risks effectively.
  • Mentorship and Development:  Lead the Technical Track, offering mentorship and guidance across all levels of the firm, and develop internal resources in areas such as project specifications, QA/QC processes, and systems integration.
  • Technical Council Leadership:  Chair the firm’s Technical Council, driving decisions on technical practice issues and promoting quality management practices across all market sectors.
  • Project Support:  Serve as a resource for technical design support, partnering with project teams to develop and implement strategies that meet project goals, including sustainability and constructability.
  • Industry Engagement:  Stay current with industry trends, participate in relevant events, and represent DRG Architects in community and professional networks related to technical design and design technology.

 

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Experience:  15+ years of experience in architecture, with a strong background in architectural detailing, building systems coordination, and technical design.
  • Education:  Bachelor’s degree in Architecture is required; architectural registration in New York State is mandatory.
  • Technical Proficiency:  Expertise in architectural building systems, national and international building codes, and the full range of design and coordination tools, including Revit/BIM, Newforma/Procore, and emerging AI tools.
  • Leadership:  Proven ability to lead organizational change, mentor teams, and collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Communication Skills:  Excellent written, graphic, and verbal presentation skills.
  • Problem-Solving:  Strong analytical abilities and experience in managing multiple priorities and complex tasks.
  • Teamwork:  Exceptional interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work closely with diverse project teams.
