Job Summary:

The Director/Manager of Tax will lead all tax-related functions for the 7 Brew corporate entity which includes a multi-unit corporate owned restaurant division, a franchisor with nearly 500 franchised locations, a manufacturing entity which produces modular buildings for 7 Brew locations and procures coffee equipment as well as a consumer-packaged goods entity which produces products sold in our stands. Our tax department is currently outsourced, so this is a unique opportunity to work with the CAO to build the department along with the processes, procedures and policies that accompany the growing company. The Director/Manager designation will be determined based upon the candidate’s skillset and experience level.

This strategic role ensures compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations (SALT), supports growth through proactive tax planning, and enhances operational efficiency through systems optimization. The ideal candidate brings extensive experience in federal and SALT compliance, deep knowledge of the restaurant industry, and strong leadership to scale a tax function in a fast-paced, multi-entity environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Tax Strategy & Planning

  • Partner with outsourced tax provider to ensure projects are managed appropriately, filings are made accurately and timely and all reporting requirements are met.
  • Develop and execute tax strategy in alignment with the company’s operational and growth goals across multiple states, jurisdictions and countries.
  • Evaluate and advise on tax implications of corporate restaurant openings, franchising structures, lease negotiations, and business model changes.
  • Partner with the CAO, executive leadership and our outsourced tax provider on tax planning initiatives, including nexus studies, franchise expansion, and real estate planning.

Federal & SALT Compliance

  • Oversee preparation, review, and timely filing of federal and multi-state income tax returns, sales/use tax, property tax, gross receipts tax, and business license filings.
  • Manage franchise tax reporting and ensure SALT obligations are met across all operating locations.
  • Coordinate with external advisors and internal accounting teams to maintain up-to-date nexus tracking and ensure compliance with varying state tax rules.

Tax Reporting & Provision

  • Lead ASC 740 tax provision process, including the year-end tax calculations and financial statement disclosures.
  • Maintain internal controls over tax accounting and reporting, ensuring SOX compliance where applicable.
  • Work with accounting to track tax payments, reconcile tax general ledger accounts and ensure accurate reporting.

Audit & Risk Management

  • Manage tax audits and correspondence with federal and state tax authorities.
  • Respond to tax notices and proactively mitigate audit risks by maintaining thorough documentation.
  • Monitor changes in federal and state tax legislation that may impact operations and advise management accordingly.

Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Build and mentor a tax team that supports growing compliance and reporting needs.
  • Collaborate closely with operations, legal, real estate, and HR/payroll to ensure tax alignment on business activities such as hiring across states and new market entry.
  • Drive continuous improvement in tax processes and systems through automation and best practices.
  • Ensure successful implementation of NetSuite and Avalara which are currently underway.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; Master’s in Taxation or JD preferred.
  • CPA certification required.
  • 5-10 years of progressive tax experience with a strong mix of federal and SALT expertise.
  • Prior experience in the restaurant, hospitality, manufacturing or multi-unit retail sector required.
  • Proven track record of managing tax compliance in multi-state, multi-entity environments.

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep knowledge of federal and state/local tax regulations, especially related to hospitality, food and beverage, and franchising.
  • Familiarity with tax treatment of restaurant-specific areas (e.g., tip reporting, depreciation of leasehold improvements, food and beverage exemptions).
  • Proficiency with tax compliance systems (Avalara) and ERP platforms (NetSuite); experience with tax automation tools is a plus.
  • Strong leadership and project management skills.
  • Clear and concise communicator with an ability to distill complex tax issues for non-tax audiences.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing taxes for franchise operations or quick-service restaurant chains.
  • Exposure to international tax issues related to supply chains or cross-border operations (a plus, but not required).
  • Experience implementing sales tax automation or managing marketplace facilitator laws.
