Job Description

Monday - Friday. PRN, as needed. Must have Neurosurgical Diagnostic Credentialing and Accreditation. 

Job Standards :
  1. Education: High School Diploma. Advanced knowledge in the field of science.
  2. Licensure/Certification: Certification or Registration in R. EEG T, R.EPT, R. NCS T or CNIM.
One year of experience in spine surgery preferred. Experience using XLTEK and Cadwell equipment preferred.
CPR certification preferred upon hire; required within 3 months of hire.
  1. Experience: Minimum of 1 year experience in Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring.
  2. Special Skills: Basic computer skills including familiarity with electronic medical records. Skills in dealing effectively with patients and medical staff. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and co-workers.
  3. Physical Abilities: Requires sitting for prolonged periods of time. Prolonged visual monitoring, staring, of intraoperative monitoring equipment. Frequent stooping, bending, pushing, pulling and twisting to move monitoring equipment, hook up electrodes to patient and assist in positioning patients. Moderate physical effort lifting from 15 – 25 pounds. Normal vision. Moderate hearing.
  4. Mental Abilities: Requires ability to concentrate for extended amounts of time under stressful conditions.
Must have the ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions accurately. Ability to communicate clearly in person and on the phone. Ability to organize time and prioritize tasks appropriately. Must have the ability to work quickly in an orderly fashion. Must be able to work well under stress.
  1. Dexterity: Requires manual dexterity for using monitoring equipment and hooking up electrodes to patients. Will be operating delicate and sensitive equipment needing frequent adjustment. Repetitive motions of hands and wrists.
  2. Working Conditions: Will be working in a clean, well-lit area. Lighting changes from bright to dim and wide temperature range changes. May be required to deal with unpleasant environmental situations resulting from patient care or patient activity. Environment may be stressful. Equipment used includes, but not limited to, intraoperative monitoring equipment, telephone, computer and writing utensils.
  3. Hazards and Risks: Works in the operating room which includes exposure to infections and contagious diseases, odorous and toxic chemicals. Involves contact with patients, operating room staff, ancillary staff and physicians.

Duties and Responsibilities :
  1. Performs neurophysiological monitoring in the operating room as ordered by the physician.
  2. Prepares equipment and supplies for required monitoring of patient according to procedures and protocols.
  3. Identifies correct patient by name, ordering surgeon and type of procedure to be performed prior to the procedure to ensure correct monitoring of procedure.
  4. Establishes monitoring equipment in the operating room.
  5. Measures and marks correct recording and stimulation sites and apply electrodes accord to protocols and procedures.
  6. Discusses baseline recordings with surgeon according to procedures. Makes any needed adjustments in monitoring according to procedures.
  7. Communicates with team members including surgeon, monitoring physician, anesthesiology and O.R. staff to ensure patient safety and accuracy of monitoring.
  8. Monitors neurophysiologic central/peripheral functioning throughout the operative procedure communicating with surgeon, monitoring physician, anesthesiologist and O.R. staff.
  9. Documents all relative communications, physiological statuses, adjustments and changes according to procedures.
  10. Discontinue monitoring at the end of procedure removes all recording and stimulating electrodes, checks electrodes placement sites for potential problems and notifies appropriate personnel if problems are identified according to procedures.
  11. Cleans and disinfects electrodes and equipment according to hospital protocol.
  12. Prepares required post-operative paperwork including procedure report, test results, billing documents and any other supporting documentation necessary to support the services provided.
  13. Restocks equipment and supplies.
  14. Evaluates and maintains equipment recommending repair and replacement where appropriate.
  15. Adheres to established objectives, performance improvement program, safety, and environment of care, management of information and infection control standards.
  16. Maintains strict patient confidentiality consistent with HIPAA privacy law, and other federal, state and local regulations.
  17. Enhances professional growth and development through participation in meetings, training and educational programs, in-house and outside training and conferences where appropriate.
  18. Maintains continuing education requirements according to ABRET requirements to retain credentials.
  19. Complies with Federal and State laws and regulations, and BHSH’s compliance program, policies and procedures.
  20. Flexibility in hours. Maintains consistent attendance.
  21. Projects a professional image at all times.
  22. Other duties as assigned.
